Dear Man-Hating Feminist, where are you? I heard you smell bad, burn bras, and are raging with anger.
If everyone says that this is what a “typical feminist” is, why have I not met you yet?
Is it because you don’t exist?
Researchers from the University of Toronto say that, “The most common words used to describe ‘typical feminists’ include ‘man-hating’ and ‘unhygienic.”
The truth is, the feminists I know aren’t that way at all. The ones I know love men, in fact, many of them are men!
The feminists I know love all people and want to see gender equality become the norm in politics, the work field, and in the Church.
The feminists I know respond to their skeptics with grace and love.
The feminists I know don’t model themselves after the idea of men-hating, anger filled women we all hear about, but after the ultimate feminist, Jesus Christ.
So, to the genuine feminists:
I’m sorry they call you degrading names. I’m sorry they speak lies about you, and try to slander your fight for equality. I’m sorry that friends have stopped calling, and family members have disowned you.
I also want to thank you. Thank you for standing up for what’s right, even when it’s not easy. Thank you for loving those who don’t love you, and for trying your hardest to always be accepting and kind. Thank you for fighting to change the way people see feminism rather than hiding from the stigma.
Thank you from me, and from the future generations who will live in world made better by your work.
“It is easier to live through someone else than to complete yourself. The freedom to lead and plan your own life is frightening if you have never faced it before. It is frightening when a woman (or man) finally realizes that there is no answer to the question ‘who am I’ except the voice inside herself.” (Betty Friedan)
